Dad&Mom's Wedding Anniversary Dinner x Daddy's Birthday .

It's monday, but we're gonna have family dinner, for dad & mom's wedding anniversary.
As well as daddy's birthday too! We're cracking our minds for dinner venue
... & we decided to have zi-char.
-
Zi Char (known as Zhi Char/Cze Char/Tze Char/Zhu Chao)
is a term used to describe a wallet-friendly, home-style cuisine from a Chinese stall, which serves a variety of ala-carte dishes & leaves you spoiled for choice.
Most zi char stalls are located in non-restaurant setting like a coffeeshop or hawker centre.
There are also some local seafood restaurants which have air-conditioned dining area.

If you want to eat cheap & good zi-char, Two Chefs Eating Place is one of the best choice!
Two Chefs... as the name suggests, opened by 2 cooks, brothers as i understand it.
Situatted at the old Ubin Seafood, which was a frequent haunt of the family some years ago, this little coffeeshop is a corner lot, with dining space al fresco.

It's located at Commonwealth Crescent, roughly 10mins away from Commonwealth Mrt,
which has been around for quite some time and crowds esp students love the place.
Reservations are highly recommended for dinner, as they were fullhouse every night.

If you wna dine in at Two Chefs without waiting, you've to get there early, before 6:30pm?
It's really crazy to see people actually queue-up for zi-char,
when actually there's two zi-char stalls in the same area.
The burst of popularity could be attributed to the article on Sunday Times which proclaimed Two Chefs as one of the best zi-char stall.

This is what i always order first!
Start with the cockles - even if people who've the thought of having them raw & got irked a little but no to me.
I love cockles, but I am very particular about them.
I dare say that this place serves my favourite cockles dish - served cold and drenched in an intensely flavoursome sauce.
I love that enough to get chomping down on those babies!
What really makes it so good is the sauce with lots of garlic, chili padi & chives,
so make sure you drown your cockle in it before throwing it down the deep end!

No visit to Two Chefs is ever complete without an order of their Butter Pork Ribs!
It's an absolute winner! It seems to be fried pork ribs (boneless) buried under a mountain of snowy-beige dusty milk powder & condensed milk (secret recipe),
which actually it's so crumbly and sweet!
But the novelty and goodness of the powder aside, the pork ribs are fried perfectly - not too thick, not fatty, very crispy... it is best eaten hot of course.

Majority favorite! Curry Fish Head!
This is one fish head curry you can eat with much gusto and less guilt.
It packs a fiery punch and has taste and texture minus the calories from coconut milk.
Curry was really thick & the fragrance... I couldn't explain.
Fish was fresh enough (i'm quite particular about the freshness) & in a good size for seven pax.

We wanted to have the usual Sambal Kangkong, but dad got his leg injured,
and kangkong isn't a great veggie for nutrients actually for those who know.
And so we'd Potato leaves w/ Sambal, the chili & sambal taste was awesome too!

Fried Prawns Served w/ Mayonnaise!
Thou i don't eat prawn nor i'd any fancy for it but i could see from everyone's expression how good it was actually hehe! Especially those flosssssss on it!

Sung Fish w/ Black Bean Sauce. The bittergourd is steamed & cooked til it's extremely soft,
and isn't bitter anymore haha! Fish is soft and good, going well with black bean sauce,
if you're a lover of it like me! I love it in horfuns!

Dried Shrimp Omelette, thou i don't take prawns but the egg smells really good.
I doubt eggs would have extremely good or bad yea? Haha.
You'll have a savory dish to go w/ steamed rice or noodles definitely.

Thick piquant gravy with bouncy chewy golden mushrooms,
and soft beancurd that simply melts in the mouth.
It's essentially those japanese straw mushrooms in a thick minced pork sauce, a little sweet but very full of flavour.

Herbal Chicken Soup came at last, while we'd all the sinful one first.
The chicken was so tender soft that i could easily break the drums & wings,
while scooping for everyone.
With a strong herbal aft-taste, you'll savor each bowl w/ esp rainy days season.

Their business was really good, as is their food.
On most nights, especially on weekends, you’ll probably have to take number for your seat.
So, to allay those two problems of seats and creative license, they opened up another outlet two years back off Upper Thomson, to reach a new crowd and tempt new taste buds.
-
Customers of such zi-char places typically eat there out of habit, and while very often they tear into the same comforting dishes, they want to be tempted with new stuff – to ease the boredom and familiarity.
Indeed, we didn't had a sumptuous dinner but the food is definitely worth coming to eat I say!
